PILOT INTERNATIONAL

Pilot International was founded in 1921 as a volunteer organization. The historic inspiration for the name was the riverboat pilot who would steer a true course through calm or troubled waters. Thus the motto “True Course Ever” and the nautical wheel emblem.

Pilot members are business and professional leaders who share a common trait, the desire to help people in need and to make the world a better place to live.  Membership in Pilot International consists of 25,000 adult and youth volunteers from the Bahamas, Canada, Japan, Singapore, and the United States. Our own Pilot Club of Lenoir City is proud of being a part of Pilot International.

Brain-related disorders

1.  The Pilot Club of Lenoir City initiated the building of a developmental pre-school playground   at the Lenoir City Elementary School to provide first-rate recreational facilities for special needs children. Pilot International provided a matching grant of $5,000 and several community businesses and organizations joined Pilot in making the playground a reality.  Completion is expected by the end of 2003.

2.   Pilot members provide and serve food to Special Olympics participants, coaches, and volunteers as well as contribute to the program.

3.   BrainMinders, Pilot International’s signature project to educate young children about brain injury prevention, will be presented to kindergarten level students in the Lenoir City and some  Loudon County schools. A grant has just been authorized from Pilot International to purchase  helmets to protect children from brain injury.

Community Service

1. Lifeline services are provided to a limited number of the community who would not otherwise  have access to the service.

2. Pilot members provide support for Festival of Friends, an event to provide recreation for the disabled, by serving food to participants and guests.

3. Members volunteer one evening a month at the Good Samaritan Center which provides help with necessities such as food, utilities, and lodging to those in need.

4. The club supports with contributions and service the Domestic Violence Center and the Child Advocacy Center.

Education, Youth, Citizenship

1. A scholarship is presented to a graduating senior each year and, the club sponsors a representative to Girl’s State where young women receive training in citizenship and government.

2. Pilot assists each year with Child Find, a screening program to identify pre-school children in need of specialized training.

3. The local club sponsors an Anchor Club at Lenoir City High School, a service organization for high achievers.

4. Pilot lends support to fire safety, the local library, and other worthwhile causes.

Funding

Monies to fund club activities are raised through the sale of pecans, walnuts, and almonds, by sponsoring an annual fashion show, and other fund raising activities as needed.
