Operation Identification

PROTECT YOUR VALUABLES

Operation Identification is a nationwide crime prevention program which emphasizes the permanent marking or engraving of household valuables with identifying numbers, such as an owner's driver's license number. This makes the property less desirable to thieves, who would have to take a reduced price for stolen merchandise so marked. Marking or engraving also aids in the return of recovered stolen property to its rightful owner. A window or door decal is often used to warn criminals that "Property in this home has been marked for easy identification by police." This often serves as a deterrent to burglary or theft.

Operation ID is often taken on as a community project by a Neighborhood Watch group, but may be utilized independently. This program has often resulted in dramatic decreases in theft and burglary.
